Trigger Happy Turrets is a small game created over the course of a University semester, from September 2019 - January 2020.
The brief was to create a tower defense game. I wanted to include some kind of twist on the genre and settled on the tower detection system. Towers in these games usually know when enemies are in their range. How do they know? Do they use motion detection and if so, how do they know what’s moving is an enemy?
In Trigger Happy Turrets you play as one of the few survivors of the robot uprising. You know enough to create basic defense turrets, but they are activated by motion - any motion. You must protect yourself from both the robot enemies and your own creations.
The player controls a drone that moves in the world outside their safehouse. The drone is used to deploy turrets but will take damage if it moves whilst inside a turret’s range. The game is over if either the drone or the safehouse is destroyed.
There are three types of turrets: the cat tower, the horse tower and the roomba with a gun. The cat tower dual wields pistols and can fire at two different targets in range at once. The horse tower randomly activates at different intervals and fires several slow moving lasers in a random direction that travel across the whole map. The roomba with a gun moves and bounces around the map. It fires powerful shots at anything within its small range.
Trigger Happy Turrets was created in Unity. Assets were created using Maya, Photoshop and Substance Designer.
